Firearms Licensing
The Everett Police Department serves as the local licensing authority for residents applying for or renewing a Massachusetts firearms license. Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing an existing license, our goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible while ensuring compliance with Massachusetts law.
Applications are processed in accordance with state requirements and by appointment.
Massachusetts issues several types of firearms licenses, including:
- License to Carry (LTC): Required for the possession and carrying of handguns and certain other firearms as permitted by Massachusetts law.
- Firearms Identification Card (FID): Required for the possession of qualifying rifles, shotguns, and ammunition as provided under Massachusetts law.
If you are unsure which license is appropriate for your circumstances, please review the Massachusetts licensing requirements or contact the Firearms Licensing Unit for guidance.
First-time applicants should expect to complete several steps as part of the licensing process, including:
- Successfully completing a Massachusetts-approved Basic Firearms Safety Course.
- Providing valid identification and any additional documentation required by law.
- Attending an in-person appointment with the Everett Police Department.
- Paying the applicable state licensing fee.
Residents renewing an existing firearms license should submit a completed renewal application and any required supporting documentation. Appointments are required, and applicants should bring all requested materials to their scheduled appointment to help avoid delays.
Before requesting an appointment, all applicants must complete and submit their firearms license application online through the Massachusetts Firearms Licensing Portal.
