Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission
Police Accreditation
The Everett Police Department is committed to maintaining professional standards, accountability, and effective law enforcement practices. As part of that commitment, the Department voluntarily participates in the professional credentialing program administered by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (M.P.A.C.).
About the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program
Accreditation is a self-initiated process through which police agencies voluntarily work to meet and maintain professional standards established for law enforcement agencies.
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission oversees the accreditation program for participating law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts. The Commission establishes standards based on recognized professional practices and provides a structured process through which agencies can review their policies, procedures, training, and operations.
Participation in the program demonstrates an agency's commitment to professional standards and to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of its operations.
Commitment to Professional Standards
Police agencies participating in the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program make an ongoing commitment to meeting established professional standards.
Participation means that:
- The agency is committed to meeting professional standards.
- The agency is willing to be assessed on a regularly scheduled basis by Commission-appointed assessors to confirm compliance with those standards.
- The agency agrees to correct deficiencies identified during the assessment process in order to establish or re-establish compliance with program standards.
The assessment process provides an independent review of an agency's policies and practices. It also encourages participating departments to regularly evaluate their procedures and make improvements when necessary.
Participation in the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program is voluntary. Law enforcement agencies may choose whether to participate and may withdraw from the program at any time.
Everett Police Department Certification
The Everett Police Department has voluntarily committed to the professional credentialing program established by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission.
In June 2026, the Everett Police Department was awarded Certification by M.P.A.C.
Certification is the first tier of the Commission's program and establishes a foundation for an agency to continue working toward full Accreditation.
To achieve Certification, the Everett Police Department successfully demonstrated compliance with 178 mandatory standards established by M.P.A.C.
These standards address important areas of police administration and operations, including:
- Training
- Police operations
- Public and officer safety
- Policy development
- Evidence and property management
- Community engagement and service
- Accountability
- Risk management
Compliance with these standards requires more than the existence of written policies. Departments must be able to demonstrate that appropriate policies, procedures, records, training, and operational practices are in place and being followed.
Everett's Certification represents the Department's commitment to maintaining professional practices and subjecting its operations to independent review.
Continuing the Process
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program is designed as an ongoing process rather than a one-time achievement. Participating agencies must continue maintaining the standards associated with their credential and periodically demonstrate continued compliance through the Commission's assessment process.
The Everett Police Department will continue its participation in the M.P.A.C. program as part of its commitment to professional policing, accountability, effective policies and procedures, and service to the Everett community.
